Gesualdo: Death for Five Voices (dir. Werner Herzog, 1995)
A fascinating documentary about the noted madrigalist and murderer. Herzog (certainly at his craziest) mixes eerie interviews, footage of the crumbling Gesualdo estate, inspired musical performances and disconcerting staged “documentary” events to assemble a unsettling hour-long examination of the ways in which Gesualdo’s legacy still haunts the townspeople of his former village, as well as his historians and aficionados.
I can’t think of anyone better to direct a film (ANY film) about Gesualdo, who, incidentally, happens to one of my lesser research obsessions (see also: contemporary opera staging, John Dillinger, rhythm and meter in Machaut, Frank Zappa). I can’t wait to check this out.
By the way, you guys are following Rats Only, right? You should be, if you know what’s good fer ya.
