“Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics. You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded. Because the elements, the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars. And the only way they could get into your body is if the stars were kind enough to explode. So forget Jesus. The stars died so you could be here today.”—Lawrence Krauss (via fuckyeahcliffordmattis, neightkelly)
Okay, listen up. I was out at my parents’ storage unit this weekend, and I found something magical: my Tascam Portastudio 02, which, for those of you who were never friendless middle school nerds with guitars and Metallica t-shirts, was an inexpensive and rudimentary 4-track tape recorder that I used in the basement of my youth. It is a little fancier than a tape player, but not much. Most importantly, it enables me to record on the computer, spit it on to tape for that wonderful warmth, and then send that recording back into the computer.
To celebrate, I am making honest-to-God mix tapes for anyone who would like one. Pick a theme, or idea, or genre, or leave it up to me, and I will make you a tape and send it to you. Don’t have a tape player? Hate nostalgia and materiality? Don’t fret: I will still send you a tape, but I am making digital copies of everything as well, complete with genuine tape hiss for that dorky bedroom listening feel. If you want one, just message me your address (or, if you’d rather not, just ask for a digital mix), and let me know if you want it themed any certain way, and then wait! I will make good on all of these!
“The Fraud Police are this imaginary, terrifying force of experts and real grown-ups who don’t exist and who come knocking on your door at 3 a.m. when you least expect it, saying “Fraud Police! We’ve been watching you and we have evidence that you have no idea what you are doing.”—Amanda Palmer’s commencement speech (video)
